As in several large French cities, a rally took place in Lyon on Tuesday evening after the death of Jean-Marie Le Pen. Seven individuals were arrested after projectiles were thrown at the police.
Seven people were arrested Tuesday evening, after a rally at the initiative of the ultra-left in the center of Lyon following the death of Jean-Marie Le Pen, AFP learned Wednesday from the Rhône prefecture. A “gathering” reformed after the demonstration was dispersed around 9 p.m., according to authorities. Trash cans were burned and projectiles were thrown at the police.
The seven people were arrested between 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. for participating in a group with a view to preparing violence against people or property and for willful damage to property by fire. Up to 600 people took part in the rally, which started at 7 p.m. in the city center. Participants notably chanted anti-fascist slogans, and fireworks were set off.
Gatherings all over France
Several hundred opponents of Jean-Marie Le Pen gathered Tuesday evening in several cities in France to celebrate the death of the co-founder of the National Front. “This dirty racist is dead”said a sign held up in Paris in the crowd of a few hundred people who formed at the start of the evening at Place de la République.
“Nothing, absolutely nothing justifies dancing on a corpse. The death of a man, even a political opponent, should inspire only restraint and dignity. These scenes of jubilation are simply shameful”commented the Minister of the Interior Bruno Retailleau on several weeks ago.
