A String Of Bitterly Cold Days Over The Next Week

THURSDAY NIGHT: Temperatures have struggled to make it out of the single digits this afternoon with the warmest locations only reaching the lower to middle teens. While much of eastern North Dakota have seen a beautiful, mostly sunny day, clouds have held tight in the F/M area and throughout much of Lakes Country. Clouds are expected to move to the south and east during the evening and overnight hours, with lows dropping below zero for most of the region with the coldest temperatures found in northeast North Dakota. Winds will be generally light out of the northwest with wind speeds at about 5-10 mph. Even with generally light winds we’ll still see wind chills in the teens below zero. Parts of the Devils Lake Basin may even see wind chills more than 20 below zero.

FRIDAY – WEEKEND: Friday will bring a mostly sunny sky with very cold temperatures. Northwest winds will range from 10-15 miles per hour. Temperatures will climb into into the low single digits in parts of our region during the afternoon hours, with wind chills staying in the teens to single digits below zero. So while it will be a cold end to the workweek, we’re also looking at a very pretty end to the week.

Over the weekend, morning lows will be in the subzero to even teens below zero range, and wind chills will be in the teens below zero or colder. So the cold weather is sticking around for the weekend. All the while, skies will be partly mostly cloudy, so not as much sunshine is expected compared to Friday . A few models also suggest snow flurries and light snow showers at the ND – SD border in the southern half of our region, but most areas will stay dry. So the first weekend of January will be cold with some clouds, but snow chances are extremely low.

MONDAY – WEDNESDAY: Models show that the first full workweek of 2025 will be bitterly cold, as Arctic air continues lingering in our region. So expect highs in the single digits and morning lows to be in the negatives. At those temperatures, light northwest winds will be much lower wind chills. So be sure to plan for the cold weather if you have to head out.

Towards the end of the week, temperatures do climb back up to more seasonable levels, as warmer air tries to filter in, leading to highs in the low-teens in some areas. Models also suggest a chance of snow next Wednesday and Thursday, however any snow we see is expected to fall in the form of light flurries with little to no accumulation expected.
