For many people, the third of January marks the first working day of the new year. After the holidays, many of us are slowly returning to our everyday lives. But be careful if you drive to work: there is a risk of icy roads in large parts of the lowlands on Friday morning.
Shady sections, bridges and side streets are particularly affected. Pedestrians should also expect slippery conditions on the sidewalks. Drivers should prepare for the winter conditions and be particularly careful.
In order to reach your destination safely, it is advisable to reduce your speed, as the braking distance is significantly longer on slippery roads. It is advisable to keep a sufficient distance from the vehicle in front and avoid sudden steering or braking maneuvers, as these increase the risk of loss of control. So drive with foresight, especially on bridges and in curves.
The weather situation today, Friday, will initially be very cloudy in many places. However, as the day progresses it becomes increasingly looser. Quite sunny weather is expected, especially at the southern foot of the Jura, in the Bern region and in inner Alpine areas. Along the foothills of the Alps the sky only becomes clear towards evening. The temperatures in the lowlands are around zero degrees in the morning and rise to around three degrees in the afternoon. The wind mostly remains weak, locally moderate at times from the west. A light to moderate west to northwest wind will blow in the mountains, and temperatures of around minus eight degrees are expected at 2000 meters.
On Saturday, the day begins in many places on the north side of the Alps with fog or deep fog, the upper limit of which is 800 to 1000 meters. The fog may partially dissipate during the afternoon. Apart from that, the day usually starts sunny. However, towards the afternoon clouds will gather from the west. Snowfall is possible in the evening. Freezing rain could set in in places in the Central Plateau on Sunday night. Temperatures in the lowlands are around minus six degrees in the early morning and rise to zero degrees in the afternoon.
On Sunday night, special caution is required in the Mittelland as there is a risk of freezing rain. Sunday morning will remain very cloudy in many places, and it may still rain, especially on the north side of the Alps. The snowfall limit rises to over 2000 meters. During the day, partly sunny weather will prevail from the west. Temperatures in the lowlands range from zero to minus three degrees in the morning, but rise to a mild six to ten degrees in the afternoon. A stormy south-westerly wind is blowing in the mountains and a temperature of around four degrees is expected at 2000 meters.
