Milan is preparing to play tomorrow evening’s match against Juventus with three players banned: Morata, Fofana and Emerson Royal. So in the event of a yellow card, will the three risk missing out on the eventual Italian Super Cup Final? No, given that since the last edition the Lega Serie A has changed the regulations on warnings and disqualifications between Serie A and the Super Cup.
“As an integration and partial derogation of the provisions of article 19 of the CGS, the sanction of disqualification, without prejudice to the fixed-term contract referred to in the art. 9, paragraph 1, letter f) of the CGS, imposed by the sports justice bodies in relation to championship matches organized by the professional leagues, will not have to be served in the Super Cup matches, but only in the first championship match following them.
In consideration of the provisions of the previous paragraph, the effects provided for in the art. 9, paragraph 5, of the CGS, regarding the warnings given, even during the Super Cup matches, they will be effective in the subsequent championship matches.
Any suspensions inflicted in relation to the Super Cup matches, which cannot be served, in whole or in part, in the same edition in which they were imposed, must be served, even for the remainder only, in the subsequent championship matches, it being understood that, to the same, those inflicted in the championship which have not yet been served before the start of the Super Cup will be added.”
The League then published examples to clearly explain the changes made on this issue:
– a player/coach sent off on the day before the start of the Super Cup or with a residual sanction, will serve the disqualification or the remainder thereof in the championship match(es) following the conclusion of the Super Cup;
– a player/manager warned before the start of the Super Cup, who is booked in the semi-final, will serve the disqualification in the championship match following the conclusion of the Super Cup;
– a player/manager warned before the start of the Super Cup, who is booked in the final, will serve the disqualification in the championship match following the conclusion of the Super Cup;
– a player/manager warned before the start of the Super Cup, who is booked in both the semi-finals and the final, will serve the disqualification in the championship match following the conclusion of the Super Cup and, once the sanction has been served, will start again with the full amount of warnings of the two sanctions (e.g. 6th sanction, 11th sanction…);
– a player/coach sent off in the semi-final will serve the disqualification in the final, without prejudice to any further bans which will be served in the championship match(es) following the conclusion of the Super Cup;
– a player/coach sent off in the final will serve the disqualification in the championship match(es) following the conclusion of the Super Cup.”
Therefore, in the event that one of Morata, Fofana and Emerson, or all three, were booked tomorrow against Juventus, they would not serve the disqualification in the possible Super Cup final but in the first useful Serie A match, i.e. AC Milan-Cagliari January 11, 2025.
