On the expressway between the Bassevelde and Kaprijke exits, a heavy hailstorm caused several incidents and six injuries. Three cars ended up in the ditch. One car drove into the spectator traffic jam.
A cloudburst with hail caused chaos on the expressway, E34, between the Bassevelde exit in Assenede and the Kaprijke exit on Thursday afternoon. The first accident took place in the direction of Knokke. A driver ended up with his vehicle in the canal due to the weather and slippery conditions and was seriously injured and taken to the AZ Alma hospital. “There is no danger to life,” says police spokesperson Eddy Defruyt.
“A car also ended up in the canal in the direction of Antwerp. The driver had to be freed, but was not injured. A little further on, a car drove into the viewing traffic jam, causing another vehicle to drive into the canal,” says police spokesperson Defruyt. “Five people were injured. They were taken to Sint-Lucas in Ghent. Another car was pushed into the left lane by that collision.”
The accidents caused a lot of traffic disruption. There is currently one lane free in the direction of Knokke. Traffic disruptions towards Antwerp will probably continue for a while. “We think it will be cleared within half an hour,” the police said.
