Elon Musk is calling for new elections in the United Kingdom, just six months after Labor Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s landslide election victory. The call comes at a time when the relationship between the US and the UK is under strain due to the impending return of Donald Trump as US president.
Editorial, TPO, January 2, 2025 – Musk, who will become a key adviser in Trump’s new administration, questions Starmer’s past as top prosecutor and calls for the release of activist Tommy Robinson. In addition, he openly expresses his support for Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party, which he believes “is the only one that can save Britain.”
The timing of Musk’s statements is striking. A recent poll shows a sharp drop in support for Starmer’s Labor government, which won a large majority in the July 4, 2024 election.
The British Prime Minister remains calm under the attacks and emphasizes that the relationship between the two countries is more important than individual leaders. With his large parliamentary majority, an early election seems unlikely. The next regular election is scheduled for 2029.
Special relationship
Musk’s interventions could have consequences for the ‘special relationship’ between the UK and the US. His repeated attacks on a key American ally are causing unrest in diplomatic circles.
Starmer, meanwhile, is trying to strengthen ties with Trump. In September, the two leaders had a two-hour meeting in New York. Although Trump called Starmer “very nice” at the time, his legal team later accused Labor of “foreign interference” in the US election campaign.
