The snowfall limit in Germany will drop to 200 to 400 meters in places today. In the storage areas of the central low mountain ranges, more than 10 centimeters of fresh snow is possible within just 12 hours on Thursday.
Between 5 and 10 centimeters of fresh snow may fall locally on Thursday afternoon in the southern German low mountain ranges. In these areas it will snow down to 400 to 500 meters, while slush may occur locally at lower altitudes.
Up to 35 centimeters of fresh snow
On Friday night, the snowfall retreats to the edge of the Alps, where 10 to 20 centimeters of new snow is expected by Friday morning. In total, up to 25 centimeters of fresh snow could accumulate in the Black Forest and the Alps by Friday morning. In the Allgäu even up to 35 centimeters are possible. There is also a risk of icy conditions locally due to light snow showers.
The maximum temperatures on Thursday will be between 3 and 10 degrees. At night the temperatures drop to +1 to -6 degrees, which means there is a widespread risk of slippery conditions.
-New snowfall this weekend
From Sunday, a new low pressure area will move in from the southwest, bringing mild and moist air from the Mediterranean region. As a result, new rainfall is expected during Sunday.
Heavy snowfall can be expected on the northern side of the warm front, while further north the precipitation will increasingly turn into rain. Snowfall can also be expected in the lowlands from Sunday, and freezing rain is also possible in the transition phase as the ground may still be frozen.
