New Year's Eve was placed under high surveillance in France, but like every January 1, the time has come for a sad countdown of incidents. At this time, two tragedies have been recorded in our areas.
A teenager knocked down in Strasbourg
Around 1 a.m. last night, a 15-year-old teenager was hit by a car driver while crossing the road in a sensitive area in the north of Strasbourg, as reported by our colleagues from Latest News from Alsace.
Seriously injured, the victim was treated by emergency services with a life-threatening condition. Despite the care provided, the young boy died in hospital during the night. The testimonies collected by our colleagues establish that the driver accelerated after knocking down the young man. The latter is still on the run but the investigation continues.
“I send my condolences to the loved ones of the young man who died during the night. All light must be shed on the circumstances of this tragedy, and every effort must be made to find its perpetrator,” declared the mayor of Strasbourg, Jeanne Barseghian, in a press release.
The system of “nearly 2,400 police officers, gendarmes, firefighters and soldiers from the Sentinel force” mobilized for the night made it possible to “contain the violence” with “a stability in the number of vehicles burned compared to last year , with a slight drop in the Strasbourg Eurometropolis,” said the prefecture in a press release.
-Around fifteen people were also injured “due to the use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices”, as well as a gendarme, “slightly injured following a mortar shot”. Around ten residential fires were also “caused by irresponsible behavior linked to urban violence”, according to the prefecture.
A fireworks mortar injures a child
A two-year-old child was injured by mortar fire during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday in Lyon. The police were called at 12:10 a.m. Wednesday for a child injured by a fireworks mortar, on Place Bellecour in Lyon. His parents said at the scene that he had been hit in one eye and one ear.
The child was taken care of by emergency services. His life prognosis is not in jeopardy, but he risks permanent disability.
