Ski World Cup: Cyprien Sarrazin transported away after a fall in Bormio

Cyprien Sarrazin, Marco Odermatt’s big speed competitor, fell badly in the second training session in Bormio. He lost control at the bottom of the track and hit his back and head hard. He then rattled into the safety net. The Frenchman had to be transported away by helicopter.

The training was interrupted for a long time. Eurosport gave at least a slight all-clear just over half an hour after training. Sarrazin is said to be conscious but has pain in his foot. Now the French Ski Association has announced new information about the speed specialist’s health. The statement says: “He is currently in the hospital in the neurological intensive care unit.”

Sarrazin was diagnosed with subdural hematon in the hospital. This is a cerebral hemorrhage that requires intensive treatment. There was another update later on Friday evening. The French Ski Association announced that Sarrazin would undergo an operation on Friday in consultation with the Italian doctors on site to drain the subdural hematoma.

Last winter, Cyprien Sarrazin was the only rider who could challenge Marco Odermatt in the speed competitions. So far this season things haven’t gone as planned for him. Only in the Super-G in Beaver Creek was there a podium – behind Marco Odermatt. It is not yet clear whether he will intervene again this winter, but it is unlikely.

Bormio should bring in a move for the 30-year-old. In the first training session he was more than a second ahead of the competition. He was also significantly faster than the competition in the second training session before he crashed so badly.
