Here’s how it goes: Liverpool start the season well. Liverpool look like title contenders. Mo Salah posts a picture with his Christmas tree. Liverpool’s season falls apart.
And what did he do yesterday?
He posted a lovely picture of him and his family in front of their Christmas tree on Instagram.
Naturally, the entire Liverpool fandom had an understandable meltdown.
“Ahhhh i was going to make you triple captain tomorrow, anyway merry Christmas” replied @onceuponatimecakesireland, while @liverpoolgariskeras.lgk added “NOOOOOOOOOOOOO CONGRATS CHELSEA FOR THE WINNING PREMIER LEAGUE.”
Why Mo Salah’s Christmas tree post is different this year
Once bitten, twice shy feels like the right saying here.
But what Liverpool fans have to realise is that everything is different this season.
Unfortunately, in the past, Liverpool have had to be perfect. They were playing against the best side in Premier League history before this, a robotic, lifeless Manchester City, an organism designed specifically to win Premier League titles and bore the life out of everyone doing it.
They even managed it once.
But that isn’t there this year. City sit seventh in the Premier League, 12 points off the Reds who still have a game in hand. They also have one win in 12 games in all competitions dating back to October.
And Salah himself is, finally, the best player in the entire world. He has 33 goal involvements in all competitions by Christmas and, even when he plays average, is still contributing to massive Liverpool wins.
His previous drop-offs in form mainly came from being overworked by the Africa Cup of Nations. That isn’t taking place this year and, even if he does have a bit of a drop-off, he’d still be an elite level performer.
Relax, Reds. This year is for real.
