Unsurprisingly, the Girondins lost 1-4 against Stade Rennais. Despite a good first half and after opening the score, the Bordelais were unable to do anything against the Ligue 1 team and were eliminated from the Coupe de France.

It was in front of more than 20,000 supporters and under intermittent rain that the Girondins de Bordeaux faced Stade Rennais on December 22. An unequal meeting on paper, between a Nationale 2 team, which plays at home, and the Bretons who play in Ligue 1.
From the 6th minute, Rennes had their first big opportunity, with a poorly aimed shot from Kalimuendo. But it was the Girondins who opened the scoring in the 18th minute. Soufiane Bahassa took advantage of a hazardous exit from the Stade Rennais goalkeeper to score the first goal of this meeting.
The Bordelais' lead will only be short-lived, Rennais Adrien Truffert equalizes with a header in the 29th minute. In added time, Soufiane Bahassa scored a second goal, refused due to offside. Halftime score: 1-1.
In the 2nd half, the Bretons seemed determined not to let Bordeaux win. Jordan James scored a second Breton goal in the 58th minute, just before, for the Navy and Whites, Thomas Trazié came into play in place of Soufiane Bahassa. The latter will not manage to score a new goal on the Girondin side.
On the other hand, for Rennes, Lorenz Assignon drives the point home with a third goal in the 75th minute, five minutes before a new goal from Kalimuendo. Final score 1-4, and the Girondins eliminated from the Coupe de France.
In the previous round, the Girondins de Bordeaux beat the Vendéens des Herbiers 2-0 in a stadium near Bordeaux, a match played behind closed doors. Furthermore, in the championship, the Bordelais are moving forward with many victories up their sleeve, and therefore encouragement.
Conversely, the Bretons team appears in the second half of the table in the first division. She makes a start to the season complicated. Stade Rennais is not participating in the European Cup, a first in 7 years. LThe Red and Black have been struggling since August. They recently changed coaches in November. Julien Stephan was simply disembarked and Argentinian coach Jorge Sampaoli took over. He was coach of OM from 2021 to 2022.
It's up to him to take on the new mission of turning around a season that's off to a bad start. THE collective rather displays helplessness and its ranking in the championship in the second half of the table is not encouraging.
The dream of winning the French Cup and repeating the victory of 2019 is still far away for Stade Rennais.
