Three episodes for a long format of 56 minutes and talk about the sound of the planets.

Quite a gamble when our name is Silence podcast and we produce podcasts about the great outdoors.

However, this is the theme of the latest audio series that Aurélien Frances, journalist whose workshop is located at the Blue House, has just broadcast.

The last episode called “ The sound of the planets, musicality »lasting 20 minutes, was posted online on the platforms at the end of November.

It was by feeling the calm of the night, its silence, that the journalist had the idea for this report, starting from a question: “are there sounds in space?” “.

To answer this through this series, Aurélien Frances gives a voice to those who work in the world of sonification.

Sonification is the transposition of a signal into sound.

Aurélien Frances, journalist

“In the interstellar quasi-vacuum, there is no noise. Except for planets that have atmospheres, there are no molecules to carry sound waves. And due to lack of matter, sounds cannot propagate in space. The cosmos is therefore empty and silent because it is airless,” explains the journalist.

Three episodes

To enter this sound world, the one who lives in Saint-Julien-de-Concelles calls on researchers from NASA, the Institute of Planetology and Astrophysics of , from the Astronomical Observatory and the Institute of Planetology.

These scientists have succeeded in converting “these strange noises emitted by certain planets into sounds, thanks to probes capable of capturing electromagnetic waves”.

The documentary invites you to discover recordings of the rings of Saturn, Mars and Jupiter with the Ulysses space probe.

Before diving, in episode 2, into the unknown sounds of exoplanets which are sometimes captured by probes and interpreted by researchers.

Project supported by the Ministry of Culture

Astronomer, student in astrophysics and musicology, research director at the CNRS and astrophysicist, composer and pianist, visual and sound arts artist, who came to work in Haute-Goulaine, follow one another during this series recorded between July and September.

The program that benefited a grant of 4,700 euros from the Ministry of Culture allows us to understand “our relationship to sound”.

And brings together imagination and science.

Public broadcasts of the documentary are planned, notably in Belgium and during the Night of the Stars.

The series should also be broadcast at the Blue House during a special event in 2025.
