Congratulations to Shamrock Rovers player Markus Poom who has had a ‘week to remember’ after becoming a dad and playing for the Irish side in a huge game against Chelsea.
Markus and his wife Rebeca, who tied the knot in September 2021, announced the arrival of their baby girl Matilde on Monday and just days after her birth, he flew to the UK to play.. with his wife’s blessing of course!
His little girl was clearly still front and centre of the midfielder’s mind on the night as he celebrated her birth by rocking his arms after scoring Shamrock Rovers’ only goal in the historic match.
Chatting with the Irish Independent, Markus said ‘it’s been a mad week’ and told how after playing against Borac on December 12 he saw lots of missed calls from his wife and knew she was in labour.
Matilde surprised her parents as her due date wasn’t until January and Markus got on the first flight he could to Estonia to be with his wife but Matilde made her grand entrance while her dad was in the air.
Markus said: ‘You can’t really choose when they come. I’m just really happy, it’s one of the best weeks of my life. It’s just amazing how life can be very calm and then in the space of a week…
‘As footballers, we have to make a lot of sacrifices and this is a prime example of one of them.’
In the days after Matilde’s birth, Markus and Rebeca spoke about whether he should head to the UK for the game against Chelsea.
He told the publication he’s ‘very happy to my wife that she let me go’ – Shamrock Rovers fans are too, Markus!
Shamrock Rovers ended up losing the game 5-1 but made history by becoming the first Irish side to make it to a European knockout stage.
A huge congratulations to Markus and Rebeca from all at EVOKE!
