Ahhhh, the Christmas holidays… The mild winter, friends, family, end-of-year celebrations, New Year’s… and traffic jams! Every year, it’s the same: everyone travels to visit their loved ones. And as the dates of the end-of-year holidays coincide with those of neighboring countries, the roads are overloaded.

However, this year the 25th falls on a Wednesday. Also, departures are spread over several days, which allows Bison Futé not to place the entire territory in red as is usually the case.

Île-de- in red

Only Île-de-France is affected by a red alert this Friday, December 20, 2024, the most congested day of the 10 days to come.

In the region, traffic this Friday is expected to be “very difficult” in the direction of departures.

Our editorial staff Paris news gives details of the traffic forecasts here.

The rest of France in orange

Outside the Paris region, the entire French territory is placed in orange in the direction of departures, this Friday, which corresponds to traffic considered “difficult”.

“All the roads should be very busy,” anticipates Bison Futé, who gives several recommendations for traveling with complete peace of mind in the direction of departures, far from traffic jams:

  • leave or cross Île-de-France before 10 a.m.,
  • avoid the A1 motorway, between Paris and , from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.,
  • avoid the A25 motorway, between Lille and Socx, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.,
  • avoid the A31 motorway, between and Luxembourg, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.,
  • avoid the A7 motorway, between and , from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.,
  • avoid the A50 motorway, between Marseille and , from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.,
  • avoid the A46 motorway and the N346 national road for the eastern bypass of , from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.,
  • avoid the Mont-Blanc tunnel (N205), between France and Italy, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Also on Saturday, difficulties could arise mid-morning in the direction of departures, particularly in Île-de-France. “These departures combined with trips to the various shopping centers or leisure places could make traffic difficult until the end of the afternoon,” warns Bison futé.
