WHAT WE ARAND TRACKING: ALERT DAY conditions are in effect right now, and for today due to hazardous travel due to accumulating snow.
NEXT 24 HOURS: A strong, clipper-like system has moved into the Coulee Region after entering from southcentral MN last night. As a result, a band of snow developed northeast of the system and shifted eastward into Wisconsin this earlier this morning around 3 or 4 AM. This band of snow persist will through the afternoon as the low pressure digs through NE Iowa. Then low digs further southeast, winds will turn around the northwest and increase in speed This evening and overnight into the Friday morning commute. Overall amounts are in the 2″ to 6″ range, with the highest amounts north of I-90. This impacts all commute times on Today. The highest snow rate or heaviest snow is expected late morning through early afternoon. Although the snow becomes light and sporadic during the late afternoon and evening hours, the gusty winds may reduce visibility due to blowing and drifting from 1-5 miles of visibility. Overall, temperatures will remain steady, only climbing a few degrees (middle to upper 20s). Gusty winds will put wind chills in the single digits along and north of I-94, with wind chills along and north of I-90 in the teens to low 20s for some.
LOOTOof AHEAD: Colder air follows this system with a brisk northerly on Friday. Slick spots are still possible for the Friday morning commute, as blowing and drifting will likely continue through Friday morning. A weak system brushes the area Friday night through early Saturday as it digs southeast just west of the region. This could result in light snow or flurries, mainly west of the river, during this time. Cold conditions persist until winds turn around on Sunday, resulting in milder temperatures. A system passes through the area late Sunday night through Monday, resulting in light snow, mainly north of La Crosse, where the low pressure is center. This could cause some travel issues; however, temperatures will be close to freezing. Mostly dry with above-average temperatures are expected Tuesday through Christmas, with some areas topping the 40-degree mark (average high temperatures are in the middle 20s to around 30). Unfortunately, these mild temperatures with snow-covered grounds may lead to long periods of dense fog or cloudy skies. A couple of systems bring some rain chances and continued mild conditions by Thursday through the following weekend as they lift northeast through the area or just to the southeast.
