The 51 accused in the Mazan rape trial were sentenced to sentences of three to 20 years in prison on Thursday, December 19. The victim’s ex-husband received the maximum sentence.
The verdict in the Mazan rape trial was delivered Thursday, December 19. None of the 51 men charged have been acquitted. All were found guilty with sentences ranging from three to twenty years in prison. Dominique Pelicot, the victim’s ex-husband, is sentenced to the maximum sentence of twenty years. Her lawyer did not say whether she would appeal. Some sentences handed down are lower than those requested. “The requisitions were absolutely exaggerated,” underlines the lawyer for two co-accused.
The verdict provokes the anger of feminist activists who came to support Gisèle Pelicot. “It’s her life that is being killed, while her husband is 20 years behind bars and he will be able to come out afterwards and make a life for himself.” believes an activist. As she left the court, Gisèle Pelicot was greeted by shouts from the crowd. The verdict was followed by reporters from around the world.
