WEATHER REPORT. Storm Dionisio puts Corsica on orange alert this Friday

Wind gusts of up to 180 km/h are expected on the Isle of Beauty this Friday, December 20.

While the Mediterranean area is affected by an episode of mistral and tramontane putting many departments on yellow alert, the Corse as for it will pass into vigilance orange wind tomorrow on the Upper Corsica and South Corsica.

Météo reports that it is a “little-known winter storm”. The site also specifies that the wind will strengthen during the night from Thursday to Friday, blowing gusts of up to 100 km/h over a large part of Corsica, 120 to 140 km/h in Balagne and on the ridges, locally 180 km/h towards Cap Corse.

Coastal areas, which are normally rarely affected, will be swept with “violent gusts close to 100/120 km/h”

This violent gale is expected shortly before 3 a.m. this Friday and should end around 2 p.m. (metropolitan time).

What could be the consequences of this storm?

The weather forecast site, Météo France, warns of possible consequences :

  • Power cuts for an interminable period.
  • Roofs and chimneys may be damaged.
  • Tree branches may break.
  • Vehicles may be taken away.
  • Traffic may be cut off.
  • Ski resorts will be disrupted.
  • The electricity distribution and telephone networks may also be impacted.

To protect yourself against this storm which will strongly affect Corsica, Météo France also advises residents of these areas to :

  • Protect homes.
  • Stay informed with the authorities.
  • Limit your movements.
  • Do not work on roofs.
  • Install generators outside homes.

The wind should gradually decrease over the course of the day and the island of beauty should return to green alert.
