Breakfast Brief

Western heat builds, East remains active

A rainy eastern U.S. will keep umbrellas up while snow falls across the interior Northeast and lower Great Lakes. The Southwest is getting a warm-up too. The Breakfast Brief is posted Monday through Friday at 5 a.m. ET.

The WeatherRadar shows another frontal system sweeping across the eastern half, bringing rain and a few thunderstorms. Eastern Texas to the Northeast has a chance to see rain during the early half of the day, while those in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast see the umbrella-worthy weather after lunch.

The colder portion of this storm will bring snow across the Great Lakes and interior Northeast. Hoping for snow in your area to promote the holiday spirit? Check the WeatherRadar now!

On this day in weather history

In 2009, a large snow storm canceled 1,200 flights across New York City. More than two feet of snow piled up from North Carolina through the Mid-Atlantic and to New York and New Jersey all before the winter solstice.

The northern tier will be getting a share of wintry weather but most of the activity will stay in the Pacific Northwest. Rain and snow will spread from northern California to the Seattle Metro through the High Plains. Have your alerts switched on just in case the downpours become heavy enough to cause flooding.
