The match for the Italian Cup round of 16 with two braces from Samardzic and De Ketelaere
A more than convincing victory. Atalanta overwhelms Cesena 6-1 and takes the pass to the quarter-finals of the Italian Cup, Samardzic, De Ketelaere (both braces), Zappacosta and Brescianini scored (the guest goal came from Ceesay). Nothing to be done for Mignani’s team who struggled throughout the entire period
of the race. Gian Piero Gasperini gave a very clear message right from the initial choices, with a thoughtful turnover and without distorting anything: the new addition was Palestra on the right in place of Bellanova, with Rui Patricio between the posts to give Carnesecchi a chance to catch his breath. Retegui confirmed in attack, with De Ketelaere and Samardzic in support: the three put on a show right from the startbut it was Zappacosta who broke the deadlock in the 4th minute, after an exchange in the area with Djimsiti. After just four minutes, in the 8th minute, De Ketelaere found the second goal at the end of a first-time tackle with Retegui himself.
Cesena struggled a lot to impose their rhythm, the hosts managed possession (61% at the end of the first half) trying to close the qualifying discussion after 45 minutes: in the 27th minute Samardzic’s goal arrived, Pieraccini’s deflection was decisive, in the 35th minute De Ketelaere scored the fourth goal after a very quick exchange in the small area together with his teammates. The script didn’t change even in the second half, Brescianini – on for just two minutes – scored the fifth goal in the 9th minute from a free kick. The guests never managed to worry Rui Patricio (except for a couple of well-timed shots from the former Roma player), the Dea found the sixth goal with Samardzic, served by Zaniolo. In the 45th minute the consolation goal arrived with Ceesay after an incorrect reading by the Bergamo defence. Practically one-sided racein February – dates still to be defined – the Nerazzurri will challenge Vincenzo Italiano’s Bologna. However, Cesena’s adventure comes to an end after eliminating Hellas Verona and Pisa.
