This Wednesday, December 18 will go down in the history of French politics. The conviction of Nicolas Sarkozy in the “Bismuth” wiretapping affair was confirmed by the Court of Cassation. As soon as this decision was announced, his son Jean was quick to show his support.

“A profound injustice”. It is with these words that Nicolas Sarkozy denounced the decision of the Court of Cassation, this Wednesday, December 18, to reject his appeal in the “Bismuth” wiretapping case, and thus to confirm his conviction, pronounced in 2021, to one year in prison under an electronic bracelet for corruption and influence peddling. Unprecedented for a former President of the Republic, this sentence also provides for three years of ineligibility.

On Instagram, his second son, Jean, immediately reacted by sharing a photo of his father hugging him when he was a little boy, with this caption: “What I see. » Welcome support for the 69-year-old former head of state who will soon be summoned before a sentencing judge to determine the terms of his electronic bracelet. “As I have always done during these 12 long years of judicial harassment, I will assume my responsibilities and face all its consequences”wrote Nicolas Sarkozy in a long message published on X.

Nicolas Sarkozy definitively sentenced, three weeks before a new trial

With this conviction, François Hollande’s predecessor as head of state is found guilty of having, in 2014 and with the complicity of his lawyer Thierry Herzog, concluded a “corruption pact” with Gilbert Azibert, senior magistrate at the Court of Cassation, so that he can try to influence an appeal filed by Nicolas Sarkozy in the Bettencourt affair.

“Nicolas Sarkozy will obviously comply with the sanction pronounced which is now final”confirmed his lawyer, Me Patrice Spinosi, to AFP, before announcing that his client would soon refer the matter to the European Court of Human Rights “to obtain the guarantee of rights that French judges have denied him”.

Carla Bruni’s husband has not finished with justice. On January 6, 2025, the trial into suspicions of Libyan financing in his 2007 presidential campaign will open at the Criminal Court until April 10. This time he will be judged there for “concealment of embezzlement of public funds”, « corruption passive », “illegal election campaign financing” et “criminal association”.
