Moroccan Bouchra Karboubi was crowned the best female referee on the African continent for the year 2024, during the Confederation of African Football awards ceremony, which was held on Monday evening at the Palais des Congrès in the city of Marrakesh, amid the large presence of prominent figures, including Patrice Motsepe, President of the CAF, and Gianni Infantino. , President of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), and Fawzi Lakjaa, President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation.
This honor comes in appreciation of the distinguished path that Moroccan wisdom has followed at the local, continental and international levels, as it led prominent matches in the African Champions League and the African Cup of Nations, in addition to its distinguished presence in the Moroccan professional championship.
Bouchra Karboubi is the first Moroccan and Arab female referee to lead the Throne Cup final in football, in the match between the Royal Army and Moghreb Tetouan in May 2022, for the 2019-2020 season. It also made a historic presence in the Women’s World Cup, which took place in Australia and New Zealand during the period from July 20 to August 20, 2023.
Karboubi was also among the refereeing crew at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, in addition to her participation in the recent African Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, which strengthened her position as one of the most prominent female referees on the African continent.
It is noteworthy that CAF President, Patrice Motsepe, confirmed during the ceremony that bringing this award back to the forefront comes with the aim of supporting and encouraging African referees, and urging them to provide the best during the upcoming awards.
