Because referee Chiffi awarded a penalty to Inter against Lazio, canceling De Vrij’s goal

During Lazio-Inter during the same action the referee Chiffi annulled De Vrij’s goal for the Nerazzurri and, after the intervention of the VAR, gave a penalty kick to Simone Inzahi’s team: what happened at the Olimpico.

Very curious episode the one staged at the Olympic Stadium in Rome during the last minutes of the first half of postponement of the 16th matchday of the 2024-2025 Serie A between Lazio and Inter. In the course of same actionon the developments of a corner kick, the Nerazzurri team first she had a goal disallowed (scored by De Vrij) and then awarding a penalty which allowed Hakan Calhanoglu to put Simone Inzaghi’s side 0-1 anyway (which will then double a few moments later thanks to Dimarco going into halftime with the result 0-2).

In fact, referee Chiffi rightly annulled the Dutch defender’s goal because after the hosts’ goalkeeper PrOvedel had blocked Dumfries’ header and the ball had ended up near Lautaro Martinez, who started from an offside position and actively participated in the action touching the ball towards his teammate who then reiterated it into the net. VAR confirmed the decision of the Paduan whistleblower but in examining the action he recognized that there had previously been a foul not recognized by the match director. After the header from the Inter winger, the ball actually hit the wide arm of the Biancoceleste defender Gigot (who recently entered the field in place of the injured Gila) who had tried to counteract Dumfries’ third half.

At that point referee Chiffi was called back by VAR to go and review the incident on the monitor and, once he had seen the images and ascertained that the touch with the wide arm by the Lazio defender was punishable, he awarded the penalty kick to Inter which Hakan Calhanoglu then coolly converted into the opening goal for the guests who in fact they found themselves celebrating the 0-1 goal twice during the same game.
