Christophe Chalençon died on December 11, 2024 at the age of 58, from cancer. A blacksmith in the village of Sault, elected to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Vaucluse, he became known in 2018 as one of the first and most publicized representatives of the yellow vest movement.
In October 2018, while the movement was growing via social networks (the call to demonstrate was launched for November 17), Christophe Chalençon, who was beginning to emerge from a diverse mobilization, gave us his very first interview. He then declared: “I am not the leader of anything. But I am the spokesperson for those who can't take it anymore. It is an apolitical movement, without parties, without unions. It is a virtuous spiral, in order to create a general movement of protest. »
Very quickly, however, the highly publicized Vaucluse blacksmith was ousted from the movement following internal disagreements. Then he launched into politics, without much success. His “Citizen Evolution” list had gathered 0.10% of the votes in Vaucluse during the 2019 European elections. Little by little, he had taken much more radical positions, via social networks (as when he called for “ besiege Paris”). In February 2023, after numerous run-ins with the law, he ended up being sentenced to eight months in prison for death threats and insults. He was released from detention in December 2023.
In the village of Sault, where he was very well known, the death of Christophe Chalençon aroused great emotion, widely relayed by social networks. Because beyond the controversies, he was also a charismatic and appreciated local figure. The funeral will take place at the Manosque crematorium (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence) on Wednesday December 18, 2024 at 11:15 a.m. A Leetchi prize pool was launched by the family of Christophe Chalençon to help finance them.
Friday December 13 at the end of the afternoon, at the friendship roundabout in Carpentras, his former companions of the yellow vests lit candles in memory of the deceased.
