The accident took place on Sunday December 15, shortly before 5 p.m., off Vieille beach, in Saint-Mandrier-sur-mer (Var). The young man, aged 18, was participating in a underwater hunting with several divers when a harpoon gun arrow accidentally touched him, reveals Var matin.

The arrow, measuring approximately 1.30 meterssank several centimeters into his abdomen, leaving him seriously injured. The emergency response was complex due to the difficult-to-access location.

A delicate and coordinated intervention

The accident site, located in a prohibited military zone, complicated access for emergency services. When the firefighters could not reach the victim, they called the SNSM of Saint-Mandrier-sur-mer for an intervention at sea.

Christophe Enault, commander of the rescue boat, says: “Arriving at the injured man, we noticed that he had an arrow of around 1.30 meters stuck in his abdomen and buried around ten centimeters” The young man was carefully lifted onto a stretcher before being transported to the captaincy of Saint-Mandrier-sur-mer.

First aid and emergency transport

On board the semi-rigid, the military nurse Laurianne Vonin took charge of the young man, lavishing him with first aid while waiting for his arrival on land. Once on site, firefighters had to cut the arrow with extrication pliers to allow it to be transported to the hospital.

Ten firefighters, the La Seyne SMUR, as well as the SNSM were mobilized for this intervention. The injured man was rushed to hospital to receive specialist treatment.
