An 18-year-old young man who was participating in an underwater hunt with other divers was the victim of an accidental shooting this Sunday shortly before 5 p.m., off Vieille beach, in Saint-Mandrier. He is seriously injured.

The intervention put in place to help him was long and delicate as the young man was on a military site with no access, near the fish parks in Lazaret Bay, where one of the divers who accompanied him had hoisted him onto the rocks while waiting for help. As the firefighters could not approach the victim, they called the SNSM of Saint-Mandrier.

A 1.30m arrow stuck in the abdomen

“We intervened with our semi-rigid in coordination with a team of coastal rescuers from the fire brigade, relates Christophe Enault who commanded the sea rescue boat. When we reached the injured man, we noticed that he had an arrow of around 1.30 meters stuck in his abdomen and buried around ten centimeters. We then carefully hoisted him onto a hard surface (a stretcher) to place him on the semi-rigid.”

“On board, of the boat, continues Christophe Enault, Laurianne Vonin, SNSM crew member and professional military nurse, provided him with first aid while he was being brought back slowly by sea to the Saint-Mandrier captaincy. Once at their destination, firefighters had to cut the titanium arrow with extrication pliers.”

The injured person was then medically treated and rushed to hospital for treatment.

The rescue system deployed on site included an ambulance, a coastal rescue team with its boat, a beaconing and extrication vehicle and a command vehicle.

In total, ten firefighters were mobilized for this intervention, joined by the SMUR of La Seyne, the semi-rigid of the SNSM of the Saint Mandrier station, as well as police officers.
