Manchester City are experiencing the most difficult phase under successful coach Guardiola. Things initially looked good for the hosts in the city derby, but then the club conceded two late goals.

In the prestigious derby, Manchester City conceded two late goals to inflict a heavy defeat on Manchester United. The 2-1 defeat deepened the crisis for the team of successful coach Pep Guardiola and was City’s eighth defeat in eleven consecutive matches in all competitions.

Josko Gvardiol (36 minutes) initially put the hosts ahead. Man United captain Bruno Fernandes (88′) and the strong Amad Diallo (90′) caused the next setback for City. The avoidable defeat leaves them nine points behind league leaders Liverpool FC.

City fans celebrate Guardiola

Before the game, the fans celebrated Guardiola, who has been at the club since 2016 and has led City to six league titles and one Champions League win, with a choreography. Most recently, he had become the man to explain the crisis at the currently struggling top club. Guardiola’s side had won five of the previous six derbies in the league, while United had won the FA Cup final against their city rivals in the summer.

The hosts struggled to cope with Man United’s sturdy defense. City were helped by a set-piece: after a short corner kick, the Belgian Kevin De Bruyne used his willpower to heave a cross into the path of Gvardiol, who headed the ball home.

In the second half, captain Bruno Fernandes (74′) initially missed a great chance to equalize. After a disastrous misplaced pass, Matheus Nunes then fouled Amad Diallo in the penalty area. Fernandes converted the penalty kick. Diallo added to his tally shortly afterwards.
