We are now at the phase of the Detroit Lions’ successful run when their questionable moves will be poked fun at. We are not used to seeing this due to the team’s lack of winning over the years.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell has been scrutinized for some of his gutsy decision-making over the last few weeks, which put him under fire today in the Lions’ loss to the Buffalo Bills.
Many felt today’s Lions vs. Bills game was a preview of a potential Super Bowl matchup, a high-scoring shootout between two high-powered offenses. Despite this, the Lions made a strange, random play call in the second half that some felt made zero sense.
Campbell decided to kick an onside kick with 12 minutes left in the game, and the team was down by 10. It didn’t work out as planned.
The Lions head coach likes to go for it. He loves to risk it all and let the juice be worth the squeeze. However, this mentality would also prove to be his Achilles heel.
Everyone from Skip Bayless to NFL Insider Bill Simmons was utterly baffled by the move.
JJ Watta player who would have thrived in Campbell’s culture, added his two cents to the decision.
Campbell would regret the failed onside kick that had Bill’s Mark Hollins recover the ball and put it in scoring range to eventually go up 45-28.
Watt brings up the valid stat of the success rate of an onside kick while also praising Campbell for his confidence in his team.
But this is the kind of move that, if made in the postseason, could be costly to a team’s hopes of advancing a step further to a title.
It would be a move even more detrimental to a team like the Detroit Lionswho have been waiting to be this dominant since the conception of the team was made.
