3:3 at Rayo Vallecano: Real Madrid drop points in the championship race

Real Madrid only manage a draw in the city derby against Rayo Vallecano. As a result, the Whites missed out on a move to the top of the table, at least for the time being. Things should get better on Wednesday in the final of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

Real Madrid were held to a 3-3 draw in the city derby against Rayo Vallecano and thus failed their dress rehearsal for the final of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup. The draw meant the Whites missed out on a move to the top of the table for the time being. The Spanish record champions, who were without their injured star striker Kylian Mbappé, are one point behind FC Barcelona, who can extend their lead with a win against CD Leganes on Sunday.

Unai Lopez (4th minute) and Abdul Mumin (36th) gave Rayo Vallecano the lead in a lively game. Fede Valverde (39) and Jude Bellingham (45) equalized for coach Carlo Ancelotti’s team before the break. Rodrygo (56) scored for the Whites in the second half, before Isi (64) equalized for the hosts at 3-3.

On Wednesday (18:00), Real Madrid will face Mexican side CF Pachuca, who beat Egyptian club Al-Ahly 6-5 on penalties, in the final of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup in Qatar.
