There were no points for the home final in 2024, Leverkusen presented themselves too ripped off in the WWK ARENA. Here are the votes on the defeat against the Werkself.
Keven Schlotterbeck: “Leverkusen controlled the game from the start and took the lead with their first shot on goal. After that we did a lot of things right, but the 2-0 defeat seemed like a blow to the neck at first. We talked about a few things during the break and then got into it better. We still had a few offensive moments, but overall we were too timid and not decisive enough in our actions. Our performance today wasn’t enough to take anything away from the German champions, even if we did well for long stretches.”
Jeffrey Gouweleuw: “We actually start the game well, but you can immediately see Leverkusen’s quality: they score two goals from two half-chances. We then decided to get back into the game with our own goal in the second half, but we just didn’t manage to do that. We only had a few chances ourselves, such as the narrow goal that was offside, but overall we simply lacked the final determination. Now we want to win in Kiel so that we can go into the winter break with a good feeling.”
Sunday Labrovic: “We didn’t allow many chances, but Leverkusen don’t need many chances. They were very efficient and scored two goals. We’ve now lost at home, so now we finally have to get three points away. It will be difficult enough in Kiel, but that is our goal.”
Marius Wolf: “It was clear that Leverkusen are a really strong opponent. They did really well with the ball and scored two goals from two chances. We could have overcome them in the second half and with a bit of luck we could score from the set piece and get back into the game, but we just couldn’t do that today.”
Jess Thorup (Coach FC Augsburg): “It was a deserved win for Leverkusen. We hoped that we could use our home strength today to make the game successful. Unfortunately that didn’t work against a strong opponent. We didn’t allow much over the 90 minutes, but we were already 2-0 down after the first half. Overall we had a few crosses and set pieces, but that wasn’t enough to come back. In the end, the result is not what we had hoped for at home in 2024. There is now only one goal in Kiel: the first away win.”
Xabi Alonso (Trainer Bayer 04 Leverkusen): “We are very satisfied with the performance and the result. We played well and showed a good mindset. That was important because we knew that it wouldn’t be easy in Augsburg. I really liked how we performed.”
