Swedish parliament approves deployment of over 1,000 servicemen to NATO

The Swedish Parliament has approved a proposal from the government to deploy over 1,000 servicemen to support NATO’s needs in 2025.

Swedish forces will be made available to the alliance until December 31, 2025. The contingent will include ground units, special forces, and airborne units, with a total of no more than 1,200 personnel. Sweden will contribute six ships and up to 24 aircraft, Caliber.Az reports, citing a statement posted on the website of the Swedish parliament.

The goal of this decision is to support NATO’s collective deterrence and defence efforts in the North Atlantic region, the Swedish parliament emphasised.

Earlier, the information went viral that Sweden will take command of a NATO base in Lapland, located in northern Finland near the Russian border. Stockholm will be responsible for overseeing the base and managing the troops, according to sources.

Sweden will be responsible for leading the NATO base and overseeing the management of troops. Stockholm may send between 20 and 50 Swedish officers to Finland. The base’s personnel will primarily be Swedish. Swedish command of the base will allow Finland to focus its efforts on defending the southern part of the country.
