FC Twente and Olympiakos held each other to a 0-0 draw in Greece. The Greek media wrote this after the Europa League match.
Given its position in the rankings, Twente had to win in Athens, but Joseph Oosting’s team did not get further than a 0-0 draw. Olympiakos also needed a win. “Olympiakos did everything to win the match, but Twente fought to the limit,” wrote Sportime.
‘In the seething Georgios Karaiskakis stadium, the Dutch were determined to seize their last chance to stay in the race for qualification through the play-offs. Twente fought with all its heart and held its ground, despite the difficult circumstances.’
Earthworm mainly aimed the arrows at the referee. ‘Poor arbitration from the Frenchman Jérôme Brisard, who made many mistakes. In the 76th minute he should have given Alec Van Hoorenbeek a second yellow card for a foul on Charalampos Kostoulas, but he did not. The referee made a lot of mistakes and issued several yellow cards for Twente.’
Brisard has already been loaned out by the French association to manage a Greek top team. ‘This is reminiscent of his poor performance in 2023 during AEK Athens – Olympiakos, when he also made the difference with his whistling (80-20 in favor of AEK). Apart from the questionable decisions, Twente failed to become dangerous. Despite their enormous desire to win, the Dutch hardly created any chances against Olympiacos.’
Metrosport felt that Olympiakos should have won the game, but noticed sloppiness on the part of the Greeks. ‘Olympiakos came out of the dressing room stronger in the second half and tried to create danger, but wrong choices in the final phase prevented success. On the other hand, the Twente players took every opportunity to become dangerous. It remained a disappointing 0-0.’
