UK: BBC Radio 4 Extra commemorates Kenny Everett
BBC Radio 4 Extra will pay an extensive tribute to Kenny Everett during Christmas week (photo above, BBC)who would have turned 80 on December 25. It has been 60 years since Everett made his debut on the offshore station Radio London (Christmas Eve 1964). Journalist Paul Rowley digitized and remastered Everett’s original recordings, including ‘lost’ tapes from his time at BBC Local Radio. The recordings, which were shelved for decades, are being broadcast in full for the first time since their original broadcast. The series starts on Monday December 23 with Rowley’s documentary Kenny Everett: The BBC Local Radio Years (2001). Kenny’s follows on Christmas Eve first program on Radio Bristol from June 1971. The documentary will be held on Christmas Day Happy Birthday Maurice Cole (2009) aired and on Boxing Day a Boxing Day special from 1971. The series concludes on December 27 with a Radio Bristol program in which Everett talks to his good friend John Lennon. According to the BBC, that conversation hasn’t been heard since 1971. Also the British Boom Radio, by the way has brand new jingles from TM Studioswill present a two-hour special about Kenny Everett on Christmas Day, curated by former colleague Nicky Horne. Kenny died on April 4, 1995 at the age of 50 from complications of AIDS.
Trump loyalist Kari Lane will lead VOA
Donald Trump has appointed Kari Lake as director of Voice of America (VOA), a congressionally funded broadcaster that provides independent news reporting to international audiences. Lake, a former news anchor in Phoenix, is an outspoken supporter of Trump known for her tough stances on immigration and criticism of what she calls “fake news.” After leaving journalism in 2021, Lake started a political career, where she stood out for spreading election fraud claims and criticizing journalists. She lost both the 2022 and recent Arizona gubernatorial election a Senate race. Founded during the Second World War, VOA’s mission is to provide independent news. During Trump’s previous term, the broadcaster was accused of biased reporting on the pandemic. President Biden purged VOA of Trump appointees. Lake’s appointment makes clear that Trump plans to restore his political influence over VOA.
