Made compulsory by the climate and resilience law of 2021, the Low Emission Zone (ZFE) will come into force from January 1, 2025 in the Nantes metropolis.

This measure voted on by the Metropolitan Council in December 2023 should make it possible to improve air quality by reducing emissions of air pollutants caused
by road traffic. Each vehicle must therefore be equipped with a Crit'Air sticker (air quality certificate), essential for traveling in the ZFE.

A “vigilance ZFE in Nantes”

According to preliminary studies carried out by Air , air quality on a metropolitan scale respects “the current European limit values in terms of air quality”.

In the Nantes metropolis, the traffic ban should be limited due to air quality. The vehicles affected by this ban are older vehicles known as “unclassified” according to the Crit'air classification:

  • two motorized wheels put into circulation before June 1, 2000,
  • cars put into service before January 1, 1997,
  • utilities put into service before October 1, 1997,
  • heavy goods vehicles put into service before October 1, 2001.

“Less than 4,000 vehicles are affected, which represents less than 1% of the rolling stock,” informs Nantes Métropole.

How to obtain the Crit'air sticker, required to travel within the ZFE?

Classifying vehicles according to their level of atmospheric pollutant emissions (from 1 to 5), the Crit'air sticker is mandatory to travel within the ZFE or when
the prefect establishes differentiated traffic during episodes of pollution. A measure effective from January 1, 2025.
The sticker must be visible on your windshield and is mandatory for driving in the event of a pollution peak and in all ZFEs in . You can order it on https://certificat-air.gouv.fr/ for an amount of €3.77 (€3.11 + €0.66 shipping costs).

The perimeter of the EPZ

The perimeter of the ZFE stops at the limits of the Nantes ring road (see map below). Vehicles limited by the ban can benefit from access to the metropolis' relay car parks (Neustrie, Porte de , Bourdonnières, Prairie de Mauves, Haluchère, Ranzay, Racteur Schmitt, Le Cardo, Marcel Paul, René Cassin, Duguay Trouin and Frachon).

This EPZ will be effective Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays) during peak hours: 7 h – 9 h et 16 h – 19 h.

In Nantes Métropole, the ZFE only concerns vehicles in circulation. It is possible to park your vehicle within the ZFE.

Exemptions for certain vehicles

Certain vehicles may benefit from an exemption to circulate within the ZFE, like “vehicles of general interest, of the Ministry of Defense and holders of the mobility inclusion card with mention of parking for disabled people and temporarily for public transport vehicles”.

In addition, Nantes Métropole has decided to grant other exemptions pour :

  • vehicles for which alternatives are very difficult to consider for technical or economic reasons (fairground vehicles, market vehicles, medical vehicles, certain types of specific construction utility vehicles);
  • home help, civil security, help for people in precarious situations, doctors and nurses in intervention;
  • support for companies in difficulty (companies in receivership or liquidation);
  • vehicles which occasionally circulate in the ZFE (appointment at the university hospital or clinic, medical emergencies, summons to state services, vehicle used for filming or an event, exceptional convoy);
  • vehicles for people who work odd hours and for whom the alternative to a private car is very difficult;
  • vehicles prohibited from circulating in the ZFE, whose owner can justify the purchase of a new compliant vehicle, with significant delivery times.
