A frog in its bubble, piping owls, an angry praying mantis, a tangled squirrel… the selection for the 2024 edition of the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards is worth the detour. Nikon revealed the winners of its famous photography competition on Tuesday, December 10. It was the Italian Milko Marchetti who won the title thanks to his photo of a squirrel stuck in a tree.

The photographer was in the Podere Pantaleone reserve, in Ravenna (Italy) when he immortalized the funny scene. “I've taken photos of squirrels in many situations, but the shot I chose to participate in Nikon Comedy Wildlife struck me immediately. The squirrel appeared to be stuck halfway in the tree hole, but in reality it was the moment it went in,” he explained.

For this tenth edition, 9,000 people from 98 countries sent their funniest wildlife photos, a record. Thanks to this photo, Milko Marchetti won a safari in the Masai Mara national reserve, in Kenya. Four other photographers were also awarded in several categories. Their photos can be seen in the slideshow above.
