The 17 million French retirees can breathe easy… and thank the opposition groups! The government of Michel Barnier had initially planned to limit the revaluation of retirement pensions to 0.8% on January 1, 2025, with a catch-up in July 2025 for “small pensions”. However, the motion of censure adopted on December 4, 2024 by the National Assembly overthrew the government, de facto canceling this plan.

In the absence of a Social Security financing law for 2025, the rule of automatic indexation of pensions to inflation applies.

Thus, basic retirement pensions will be revalued by 2.2% on January 1, 2025as the Ministry of the Economy announced to our colleagues at West this Tuesday, December 10.

This automatic increase is good news for the wallets of retirees, who will see their pensions adjusted according to the increase in the cost of living in 2024.

As a reminder, in 2022, the average amount of a retirement pension (excluding survivorship) amounted to €1,626 gross per month, or €1,512 net.
