Esteban Ocon competed in his last Grand Prix with Alpine in Qatar. The Frenchman will be replaced by Jack Doohan for the final race of the season, in Abu Dhabi, this weekend.
Esteban Ocon's story with Alpine F1 has just ended earlier than expected. Although his contract officially runs until the end of the season, the French driver will give way to Jack Doohan for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. A decision which, according to the team's statements, seems to suit all parties.
An imminent announcement for Abu Dhabi
Although Alpine has not yet officially confirmed this early departure, team principal Oliver Oakes has suggested that this option is being seriously considered. Questioned during a press briefing, Oakes ended up admitting that it could “make sense”.
“There have been discussions about it. Nothing has been decided yet, but the idea is on the table. Esteban is still an important part of our team, but he is also linked to Mercedes. He also wants to be released early, and it could suit everyone” he explained.
For Alpine, allowing Jack Doohan to race in Abu Dhabi provides a valuable opportunity for the young driver to integrate into the team in a competitive setting before the start of the next season.
Facilitated discussions between Mercedes and Alpine
Ocon's early move to Haas for 2025 requires agreement from multiple parties. However, the relationship between Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff and Alpine F1 advisor Flavio Briatore appears to play a key role in the positive outcome of these negotiations.
“Past disagreements have been overcome, and current discussions are following a natural evolutionOakes said. Whether it's giving Jack a test run or allowing Esteban to calmly prepare for Haas, it seems to suit everyone.”
Wolff and Briatore optimistic about quick solution
Before leaving the paddock at the Losail circuit on Sunday evening, Toto Wolff confirmed that discussions had taken place with Alpine to iron out the final details.
“Esteban has a contract with us and Alpine which expires at the end of the year. But if a solution emerges that allows him to better prepare for Haas, we are open to the idea.” said the Mercedes manager.
According to Wolff, final decisions will be made very quickly. An official announcement is expected today, suggesting that the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will mark Jack Doohan's debut in Formula 1.
A transition that benefits everyone
This advance decision seems to meet several objectives. For Alpine, it's about offering Jack Doohan a smooth integration. For Ocon, this will allow him to turn the page on Alpine and concentrate fully on his new challenge with Haas. Finally, for Mercedes, this transition marks the end of a partnership while facilitating planning for future seasons.
