It is not the first time Phillips has taken such a diving catch in that region, for he has made a habit of plucking such grabs with full-stretch dives.

Glenn Phillips took a magnificent diving catch at the gully region to send back Ollie Pope on the second delivery of the 53rd over. While New Zealand have dropped plenty of catches this innings, Phillips is among the finest fielders in the world and plucked out of thin air to provide a big breakthrough to New Zealand.

Southee bowled a back-of-a-length delivery outside the off-stump line to Pope, who went hard to cut it aerially. It was going away from Phillips and looked to be going to the boundary, but the fielder came in between out of nowhere.

He dived horizontally to his right and aerially and went with one hand towards the ball, grabbing it cleanly. He quickly went up and celebrated with both arms aloft, for he had plucked a fabulous catch to provide a wicket against the run of play to New Zealand.

England march on New Zealand’s first-innings total as Harry Brook hits ton

After winning the toss, New Zealand scored 348 – thanks to a terrific knock by Kane Williamson, who scored 93 runs. Glenn Phillips (58) and Tom Latham (47) also played nice hands for the Kiwis to take them to a decent first-innings total.

Brydon Carse and Shoaib Bashir snared four wickets each, while Gus Atkinson dismissed two batters for England. England didn’t have a great start during the second innings, for they lost Zak Crawley on a duck, whereas Jacob Bethell (10) and Joe Root (0) couldn’t contribute much, either.

However, Harry Brook and Ollie Pope stitched a fabulous 151-run stand for the fifth wicket to put England in the front. Pope departed after a well-made 77, but Brook has completed his century and is unbeaten on 112.

Ben Stokes has partnered him, and the duo are looking to take England’s innings forward. They will look to end the deficit and help England gain a healthy first-innings lead.
