The Riyadh Metro will open in December, divided into three distinct phases to enhance connectivity. The Royal Commission of Riyadh unveiled plans to launch six automated metro lines with driverless technology. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
During the first phase, starting December 1, 2024, three major metro lines will begin operations. The Blue Line will cover 38 kilometers with 24 stations, while the Yellow Line will span 29.6 kilometers with nine stations. The Purple Line will extend 30 kilometers, connecting key areas such as King Khalid International Airport and King Abdullah Financial District.
Infrabel Enhances Railway Network with Advanced Technology
Two weeks later, on December 15, the second phase will see the launch of the Red and Green Lines. These lines will cover 25.3 kilometers and 12.9 kilometers, respectively. The final Orange Line, stretching 40.7 kilometers, will begin service in January 2025. Altogether, the metro network will span 176 kilometers and include 85 stations.
The Riyadh Metro is part of a larger initiative to improve public transportation in Saudi Arabia’s capital. This project aims to reduce traffic congestion on roads where 90% of trips are currently made by car. Additionally, the program includes a network of bus routes designed to complement the metro system and enhance city infrastructure.
The Riyadh Metro will be the second metro system in Saudi Arabia after Mecca’s, which operates only during Hajj. However, it will be the first fully automated system in the country, boasting the highest GoA4 automation level.
In September 2024, officials announced plans for a new seventh metro line spanning 66 kilometers. This line will include 47 kilometers of underground tracks and 19 kilometers of above-ground sections. Four international consortia have expressed interest in the project, highlighting its significance for the region.
Phases of the Riyadh Metro Launch
The Riyadh Metro’s first phase begins on December 1, 2024, with three primary lines opening. Subsequent phases will complete the network’s launch by January 2025.
Importance of the Riyadh Metro for the City
The Riyadh Metro will reduce traffic congestion and improve environmental conditions across the city. This cutting-edge system will be the largest automated metro network worldwide with GoA4-level technology.
