From Wednesday evening, code orange applies in the Northern Netherlands due to storm Conall. The Dutch weather service KNMI warns that there is a high chance of dangerous weather. The Dutch airline KLM is also taking measures and has canceled 72 flights to and from Schiphol.
According to the KNMI, the north of the Netherlands in particular will experience nuisance and damage from storm Conall. The storm is accompanied by very heavy wind gusts of 120 to 130 kilometers per hour in the coastal areas and 100 to 110 kilometers per hour a bit inland. Dangerous situations may arise in areas for which code orange applies, according to the weather institute.
The ANWB expects a very heavy evening rush hour throughout the country. “Traffic will be disrupted, cyclists and drivers of trucks and cars with trailers in particular must be alert. Trees can be blown over and there is a risk of damage to houses and buildings, such as roofs.”
Flights cancelled
KLM has canceled 72 flights to and from Schiphol due to storm Conall. A spokeswoman confirmed this on Wednesday morning after reports from regional media. “Ultimately, safety comes first and that is why we have canceled flights for this afternoon as a precaution.”
The canceled flights would go to various destinations in Europe. The spokeswoman speaks of 36 return flights. According to her, affected passengers are informed and the airline tries to rebook them on another flight.
The spokeswoman is not yet sure whether all flights will continue on Thursday. “Everything is still planned for tomorrow, but the situation is being examined from moment to moment,” she says.
According to Schiphol’s website, most flights from other airlines will continue. However, two Scandinavian Airlines flights have been cancelled.
Belgium is spared
In Belgium, with a bit of luck, we will be largely spared from storm Conall. Although the wind will also increase in strength throughout the day. Gusts of 55 to 70 kilometers per hour are expected. In certain places, such as on the coast, there can be wind gusts of up to 75 kilometers per hour. It remains calmer in the southeast of the country with gusts of about 50 to 55 kilometers per hour. There is no warning for wind in our country.
