The Minister of Economy and Finance, Antoine Armand, said he was prepared this Thursday, November 28, 2024 to make “concessions” on budgetary texts, in particular concerning the tax on electricity, in order to avoid the ” storm “ economic and financial that according to him the fall of the government without a budget would result.
“It is not a word chosen at random, it is a word which has financial, economic and budgetary resonance, and we are obviously ready to make concessions to avoid this storm”declared Antoine Armand on BFMTV/RMC .
Motion of censure
The minister notably mentioned the tax on electricity, the planned increase of which is considered « inadmissible » by the far-right National Rally (RN) party, which has the largest number of elected representatives in the Assembly.
Wednesday evening, the president of the RN Jordan Bardella estimated on BFMTV what “If the government is stubborn and does not want to discuss, then this government will fall.” Comments which confirm those of the RN deputy Jean-Philippe Tanguy on RTL this Wednesday, denouncing the lack of consideration of the remarks of the National Rally by the government. And added later in the day that his group would vote on the motion of censure with the left.
François Hollande will vote for it
For his part, former President of the Republic François Hollande said he would vote for the motion of censure in the event of a 49-3 vote. “Yesterday there was another meeting between Michel Barnier and the presidents of the socialist (parliamentary) groups. They made proposals. None were accepted. So the consequence, if there is a 49-3, it is a motion of censure. And I will vote for this motion of censure,” he said this Thursday morning on France Inter.
The left and the far right could bring down the Barnier government by voting together on a motion of censure in the event of recourse by the government to article 49-3 of the Constitution – which allows a text to be passed without a vote by engaging the responsibility of the executive – on the Social Security budget or that of the State.
