Inter President Beppe Marotta insists that the Nerazzurri are solely focussed on Tuesday night’s Champions League game against RB Leipzig, despite the fact that they have to play second-place Fiorentina in Serie A at the weekend.
Simone Inzaghi has made several alterations to his team for the RB Leipzig clash, and Marotta would not be surprised if the line-up changes again for Fiorentina, as Inter currently have ‘24 players who fitt all the needs we have.’
Speaking before kick-off in Inter-RB Leipzig, Marotta explained why he has enjoyed the new Champions League format, and why it is important for the Nerazzurri to win as many games as possible.
“We know that we have grown as a team and as a group and have greater confidence in our means, so it’s obvious that we had a lot of determination and got some good results over the last few games, “Marotta said.
“With this new format, we have to try and get more points, because there will be a big pile-up and goal difference will be key. Each match has a story within itself.
Asked if Inzaghi selected tonight’s line-up with half a mind on Fiorentina at the weekend, Marotta said: “I wouldn’t say so, because this is a team full of experienced players who know that they have to play every three days.
“Tonight, we’re focussed on Leipzig. On Sunday, we’ll face a team that is diong extraordinarily, and are deservedly in second place in the standings. It will be a difficult game, like all our trips to Florence.”
Marotta: Inter have ‘24 players who can fit all our needs’
Marotta also discussed the growth that the Inter squad have enjoyed over the last few years, praising the consistency in terms of personnel.
“This squad is 90% the same as it was a year ago, and 60% the same as it was two years ago. Inzaghi has players who have grown, good players, and I’m talking about starters and co-starters.
“We have a very strong bench, as it should be for such a big team with so many different commitments. Inzaghi can chose his formation by looking around at a squad made up of 24 players who fit all the needs we have.”
