Landing on the famous platform in 2022, The Samaritan by Julius Avery follows thirteen-year-old Sam Cleary (Javon “Wanna” Walton), certain that his mysterious and lonely neighbor, Mr. Smith (Sylvester Stallone), is the super-powerful vigilante of Granite City.
While most people think that this hero died in the flames, after a tragic fight with his rival, Nemesis, Sam is hopeful that he is still alive. As the city teeters on the brink of chaos and crimes multiply, the young boy makes it his mission to persuade his neighbor to come out of hiding and save the city from ruin.
Never two without three (superheroes)
We sometimes tend to forget it, but this is not the first time that Sylvester Stallone slips into the skin of a superhero. Remember, in 2017, the cult actor played Captain Ravager Stakar Ogord on screen in Guardians of the Galaxy II, and in 2021, he lent his features to King Shark in The Suicide Squad.
But here it's different, because unlike the two previous blockbusters, The Samaritan of Julius Avery is an original film not adapted from comics. This brave character, created by screenwriter Bragi Schut, has strong similarities with Batman.
Like Bruce Wayne, it is in the shadows that Joe Smith watches over the prosperity and safety of the city of Granite. Among the numerous comments published on AlloCiné, we can read: “A very good aging action and superhero film”, “We had to wait until the 76th anniversary of Sylvester Stallone so that we finally see him (!) in the role of a real superhero”or even “Superhero film vastly superior to all current cinematographic productions”.
