If you missed it at the cinema, you can catch up this evening with a punchy film in which François Civil delivers an intense performance.
Starring in L'Amour ouf, one of the biggest French cinema successes of the year, François Civil continues to be one of the essential faces of French cinema. But Gilles Lellouche's film is not the only feature film in which the actor distinguished himself in theaters in 2024.
François Civil distinguished himself this year with one of his most intense performances in a punchy film, inspired by a true story which was intended to offer a reflection on the treatment of teachers by National Education . If you missed this score at the cinema, you can now catch up on CANAL+.
François Civil in one of his most intense roles
In Pas de vague, François Civil plays Julien, a young and determined college professor. He tries to create a bond with his class by taking a few students under his wing, including the shy Leslie. But this preferential treatment is poorly received by certain comrades who attribute other intentions to the professor.
Julien finds himself accused of harassment and the rumor spreads very quickly. The professor and his student each find themselves caught in a spiral and their personal lives are scrutinized to the detriment of the truth. In front of a college that risks going up in flames, a single watchword: no waves…
Director Teddy Lussi-Modeste was inspired by his own story and his past as a former professor left to his own devices after a slanderous denunciation and François Civil invested himself like never before in this role according to him:
“François is an actor who never ceased to impress me on set. He was more than an actor who came to play his role: he was in fact so invested and so generous that I consider he created as much the character that I am.
Before filming, he isolated himself to learn his lines and when he returned, he had become Julien. There was something changed in his gestures, his speech, his very being. The paradox with François is that he is a very identified star but we can project all possible universes onto him. This comes from his work and the immediate empathy he provokes.”
His impressive and intense performance serves the purpose of the director, who was able to count on the help of co-writer Audrey Diwan to transcribe his heartfelt cry and the movement to free the speech of destitute teachers neglected by their hierarchy.
François Civil embodies this political and artistic gesture in front of a troupe of impeccable young actors, including Mallory Wanecque (Les Pires) whom he then found on the set of Gilles Lellouche for L'Amour ouf in which she plays the adolescent version of Jackie , played older by Adèle Exarchopoulos.
