Strike in education: ‘I think this is the start of a fight that will be long’, according to Roland Lahaye (CSC)

“It’s been a long time since I’ve seen such spontaneous mobilization from teams and schools”reacts on La Première the secretary general of the CSC education Roland Lahaye, in speaking about the strike day which takes place this Tuesdayi in French-speaking education. “Schools which are usually resistant to strikes and are today at a standstill because all the teachers feel concerned and are aware of the breakdown that is being predicted in education.”

“We have been sending signals for a long time” to the ministers in charge of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, he continues, recalling previous mobilizations in the streets. “After an information phase since September, we are moving to another type of action at the request of teachers, we have considerable pressure from the base saying ‘when are we going to take action?’ I think this is the start of a fight that will be long.”

The ministers concerned are Valérie Glatigny (MR), in charge of compulsory education and social promotion, and Minister President Elisabeth Degryse (Les Engagés), who is responsible for the budget and higher education. Roland Lahaye admits to having regular meetings, “but this is not the consultation that we have been accustomed to in the world of education for years. The proof is that everyone is unhappy, in six months she has alienated the entire sector : trade union organizations, PO federations (organizing authorities), parents and certain platforms, such as those for the fight against academic failure, that for the fight against poverty. The whole of society is aware of the discomfort and discomfort that reigns in education!”
