To answer a question some still may have after the seemingly conclusive finale of Arcane season 2, no, there is not going to be a season 3. There was never planned to be one. Instead, we’ve heard for a while now that other League of Legends-based shows are in development, and now in the wake of that finale, we have more information.
Arcane co-creator Christian Linke has revealed that three shows are in development, series based in three regions, Noxus, Ionia and Demacia. One of these shows, he would not say which, has already been in development for a year, meaning hopefully we could see it in say, two years instead of three, shorter than the gap between the two seasons of Arcane. Given that all three are in production rather than just being conceptualized, that’s a good indicator they will all see the light of day, someday.
(Update: Riot’s Marc Merrill clarified Linke said they were “exploring 3 regions,” not three separate shows. But then he says they are “exploring a bunch of different shows,” so it’s not clear if that’s…three or more).
My guess is that given how heavily Noxus was featured in Arcane, that could be the first one, but we don’t know for suree. If you’re looking for a potential cast list, here are some of the higher profile League heroes that are from each of these regions:
NOXUS:
- Darius
- Draven
- Riven
- Katarina
- Cassiopeia
- Swain
- LeBlanc
- Talon
- Sion
- Samira
- Vladimir
- Rell
IONIA:
- Ahri
- Akali
- Irelia
- Karma
- Know
- Lee Sin
- Master Yi
- Shen
- Zed
- Yasuo
- Again
- Jhin
- Set
- Syndra
- Lily
- Xayah
- Friends
DEMACIA:
- We are
- Lux
- Jarvan IV
- Fiora
- Xin Zhao
- Vayne
- Quinn
- Shyvana
- Sona
- Poppy
- Sylas
- Kayle
One reason I think that Noxus is on the table as coming first is because there was a clear nod to Swain at the end of the finale, as we see his raven make a guest appearance. And again, a huge part of this story was based on Noxus forces with Ambessa inside Piltover.
But you can see what Riot’s vision here is, that it has an enormous roster of characters and stories to draw from. However, even as most League fans like Arcane, there has been complaining that the events of the show rewrote a ton of existing lore about Piltover and its major characters, which would no doubt be true of other regions featured. But my guess is that Riot may not care about this as they have now made one of the best animated media properties of all time, and that storytelling takes priority.
It will likely not be until 2026 or 2027 until we see a new Arcane series. I am wondering how this is all going to work with Fortiche, the French animation studio who made Arcane this level of unprecedentedly beautiful, given that they may have four shows to work on, and I don’t think anyone wants to see non-Fortiche animation, given what Arcane has given us so far. Hopefully they can handle it.
