On the occasion of the broadcast of his show Emmanuel 2 on Canal +, Manu Payet spoke to Sat Cable TV. With our colleagues, the comedian born in Reunion Island explained why his beginnings in Paris were difficult.
Comedians often have a dark side that they mask with laughter. At the age of 48, Manu Payet seems to want to tell more about himself. While a new recording of his show Emmanuel 2 will soon be broadcast on Canal +, the comedian spoke to Sat Cable TV. “I hide less who I am”admits the man who is now the father of a little girl to the weekly.
Although today he seems to embrace his Creole identity, his beginnings in the French capital were not always easy, as he recounts: “When I arrived in Paris in 2000, I was treated to racist comments. A film director introduced me to everyone by saying: 'Manu, who arrived at our house with his bamboo raft that he made himself,” he remembers, specifying that this situation was “complicated to live with.”
Manu Payet: becoming a father made him “humble”
When he lists family obsessions with order and discipline, Manu Payet does so with tenderness, never unkindly, always with respect. “Paternity [sa fille Jonie est âgée de 7 ans, ndlr] made me humble”he explains, in the pages of Gala last May. And the person concerned added: “I have spent my life criticizing my parents who were only 22 when I was born, and I realize that it is not that easy to raise a child.
Alongside his discreet companion Pauline, he takes care not to reproduce some of their behaviors or concerns. He also learned to forgive his father who died in 2007. “Un day, he gave me a dough because he thought I stole his money. After realizing his mistake, he apologized. I prefer to remember these moments than others“, assure Manu Payet.
