Traian Băsescu, the former head of state between 2004-2014, is one of Elena Lasconi's declared supporters, even if he believes that she has some “gaps” in the position she aspires to, but he is counting on her honesty.
Băsescu is convinced that the USR leader will become the future president of Romania and, from this perspective, offers him some advice. “Until December 21, when the president changes, he has time to read about the Middle East, the Black Sea, Russia and the Treaty of Lisbon“, said Traian Băsescu in a televised intervention on Digi24.
He claims that the surprise of these elections, Călin Georgescu, will have an adversary in him, considering the Russophile and Legionnaire slippages, which is why he refused to appoint him prime minister in 2010, as was desired by some quarters.
“Georgescu knows books. Georgescu's problem is not the lack of book knowledge, but the faith he has, which has nothing in common with the developments of modern European society, even if I and everyone around me are people who, being in The European People's Party, I believe in traditional values - family, religion, church in our life. But, Călin Georgescu is far beyond what can be accepted in the European Union today, and even what could be accepted in the interwar period – the legionnaires were not accepted, and they were an evil of the interwar period, and of the Second World War period. Or, his faith has nothing in common with the modern faith, and leads rather to legionaryism. (..) Georgescu is not a solution for Romania. Exactly for the reasons I told you now that I will not support him, exactly for the same reasons I did not accept him as prime minister in 2010, when the Boc Government fell.” said Traian Băsescu.
Băsescu also said that he was called by European leaders to find out how such an ascent of Georgescu happened.
“They asked me the reason why those from the European Commission and the European Parliament arrived here, and I told them that it was because of the deep corruption, the fact that Romania returned to a prime minister who manages the budget like his own pocket. I explained to them and they couldn't believe that such a thing is possible in Romania. I also told them that the propaganda says that in statistics we live well, but in reality it is bad”, Traian Băsescu also mentioned.
