Situation
The snowfall has ended since yesterday evening but the depths remain significant on the ground on the axis going from Normandy to the south of Alsace and Franche-Comté. The icy conditions are not widespread because the traffic routes have been treated and the frost was less than feared. However, certain areas of hills and plateaus (Normandy, Île-de-France outside Paris, Burgundy and Franche-Comté remain buried under 20 to 30 cm of snow in places, which stranded motorists all night.
The situation will improve over the next few hours under the combined action of a slight mild spell, the treatment of the roads and the return of clearings.
Please note: the scattered flakes which fall early in the morning from Normandy to the Ile-de-France plateaus and to the north-east are only showers and will not change the evolution of the situation.
In Corsica, the wind is blowing like a storm and will calm down at the end of the morning.
All these alerts will therefore be lifted at noon.
Observation
Early in the morning
Temperatures were often close to 0°C but the frost, which was weaker than feared, limited the risk of widespread icy conditions. In addition, the axes have been processed. However, in areas of hills and plateaus, the secondary network is still locally difficult to pass.
Light showers of snow, sleet and sleet fell from Normandy to Île-de-France and towards the northeast. This remains anecdotal and should not worry you because these showers do not hold on the ground in built-up areas, and only bring a few scattered sprinkles out of proportion to yesterday's situation.
In Corsica, the wind is still blowing like a storm (177 km/h at Cap Sagro in the north of Corsica) and 120 km/h in Bastia.
Evolution
SNOW/ICE ALERT
Scattered showers bring a few dustings on the already snow-covered ground. This remains anecdotal. Black ice forms on the untreated secondary network but is not particularly aggravating because the frost is less pronounced than feared. The action of salting the roads, the return of clearings and mild temperatures during the day will limit this risk. On the other hand, the large thicknesses of snow (15 to 20 cm from Normandy to the Île-de-France plateaus, as well as in the Center-East) will not melt during the day.
WIND ALERT
Until Friday noon
The wind is falling in mainland France, while it is stormy in Corsica with gusts above 130-150 km/h in the mountains and the capes, even close to 170 km/h at the Corsican Cape.
