(WSAZ) – Clouds have spread across the region, with rain/snow already moving in from Ohio. Temperatures will generally remain 35-40° during the day, keeping things toward the rain side of things, perhaps outside of some brief burst of snow that can temporarily appear on the grass. As the Sun goes down in the afternoon, expect all corners to become all-snow as temperatures drop through the mid and lower 30s. The snow will mainly be light as far as these events go, but the first one is always carries extra weight. By dawn Friday, most folks will see their first trace to 1″ of snow, with some localized areas at 1″- 2″ of snow, mainly dependent on elevation and how the steadier bursts track. Elevations above 2000 feet will be more in the 1″- 3″ range by dawn but with more on the way during the day Friday.
Most treated roads in the lowlands should stay primarily wet, but it can be tricky on the bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads Friday morning. There is the potential for school impacts, though mainly toward the mountains where the snow will continue through the day. The lowlands will warm back up to about 40 degrees on Friday, which will melt away whatever snow did fall and replace it with a dreary rain. The winds will be gusty at times on Friday, making it quite an uncomfortable day. The worst weather is reserved for the eastern mountains above 3000 feet, where upwards of a half-foot or more of new snow will fall Friday, making cross-mountain travel hazardous holiday travelers, even on I-68. By Saturday morning, the ski slopes should be at 12″ or more of snow on the ground.
Saturday’s scattered showers and mountain flurries will fade, but the clouds will be very slow to break during the afternoon. Highs Saturday should reach the upper 40s, but then drop back through the 30s Sunday morning as clearing takes hold. Sunday itself will feature our best shot for sunshine (and best travel conditions), with afternoon temperatures in the upper 50s. Monday of next week may hit the low 60s, but scattered showers from our next system will move in, and we’ll dip back colder in the days beyond.
