Staffordshire gritting crews have been working through the night and into this morning, as snow and sleet fell across the county.

Crews were out from 3pm yesterday in the north of the county, and 7.30am in the south salting routes ready for forecasted sleet and snow.

A total of 38 gritters, fitted with slow ploughs, covered primary and secondary routes across the Staffordshire, totalling around 1,600 miles.

In East Staffordshire where B5017 joins the A515, crews stopped to help a lorry that had gotten stuck, helping the driver before treating and clearing the area.

Crews have rolled out again this morning to treat the network further, and have been monitoring conditions throughout the day.

With the risk of more snow showers across the county this evening and a frost tomorrow, crews will once again hit the road this evening to make sure they are prepared for more bad weather.

Staffordshire County Council Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways Mark Deaville said:

“Our gritting crews have done a fantastic job overnight and into today, as they always do, making sure the main roads are clear to keep the county moving. The weather reports we got yesterday were spot on, meaning we could plan ahead and ensure crews were out at the right times to make sure the roads were clear.

“Our crews aways do a great job dealing with very tricky conditions, especially up on higher ground in the Staffordshire Moorlands. We’ll still keep monitoring the weather today and over the next few days as it remains cold, and our teams will be out as and when needed.

“Even though our crews do their best to clear roads, there may still be some tricky driving conditions out there. I’d advise people to slow down, and drive to the conditions of the road. That way, they will be able to get to their destination safely.”
